Meet the Team

  • Hannah Solway

    CHAIR

I am a marine conservation biologist (MSc) studying the impacts of climate change on ship strikes to large whales. I firmly believe that ocean literacy is the most powerful means by which we can effectively conserve and protect our oceans—a mission that Surfrider and I are deeply committed to. After living in Atlantic Canada for the last 6 years, I knew it was the perfect place for Surfrider to establish itself next. I'm dedicated to making the ocean accessible to all, fostering stewardship and appreciation for our marine environments. When I am not doing research, I help increase ocean literacy across the globe by developing scientific content for Ocean School, a free online ocean educational resource. I also worked with the Marine Animal Response Society, rescuing and studying marine animals. I love to hike, surf, camp, and spend as much time outside as possible!

  • Karinne Lantz

    VICE CHAIR

I am grateful to call Nova Scotia home. Growing up on Vancouver Island, oceans and mountains were easy to take for granted when I was young. Later, living away from the coast made me miss and value the oceans more; oceans provide a place for us to play and a source of livelihood for many in Atlantic Canada, while they play a vital role in keeping our planet healthy.

The idea that we hold the earth in trust for future generations resonates with me, as does the understanding that society is the sum of its parts. Collectively, small positive acts can have the potential for meaningful effects. This is part of what has motivated me to become involved with Surfrider Canada. If we can do a bit of good while encouraging others to do a bit, too, we can help ensure that our ocean playground stays as healthy—and beautiful—as possible.

  • Ed Wark

    CO-VICE CHAIR

Since retiring early, I had been looking to volunteer for an organization that is doing good things in the community, and have found it in Surfrider. I may not be a surfer but Surfrider’s combination of concern for the environment and promoting outdoor activity aligns perfectly with my values. For the first fifteen years of my career, I worked in a range of roles in the political sphere, including as an aide to a cabinet minister in my native province of BC and as the executive director of the Nova Scotia NDP. Along the way, I managed numerous riding-level and provincial election campaigns. The next fifteen years of my career were spent in communications and policy work, with a particular focus on health care. In my spare time, I ski, mountain bike, hike and renovate houses.

  • Ben Bears

    TREASURER

My name is Ben, and I’m the treasurer of the Surfrider Atlantic Canadian chapter. I grew up on the south shore of Nova Scotia but moved to Halifax for school and stuck around after. I took up surfing 11 years ago and was hooked immediately. My passion for surfing has led me to work for East Coast Surf School for the past five years, so I’m at the beach almost every day. I’m excited to be playing a bigger role with Surfrider in keeping our beaches clean and accessible for everyone. When I’m not surfing some of my other hobbies include chess, volleyball, and macroeconomics.

  • Laura Bongo

    CAMPAIGN COORDINATOR

I grew up in Saint John, New Brunswick, alongside the Bay of Fundy. My educational background includes a BSc in Environmental Science from Acadia University and a Master of Marine Management from Dalhousie University. Through my studies I have become passionate about protecting marine spaces and wildlife from human pressures such as marine debris, pollution, overfishing, and coastal development. I have surfed for many years in both New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, and I am excited to blend my love for surfing and environmental activism working with Surfrider.  Surfrider first became known to me through their strong presence in Tofino when I lived there in 2023, and I am excited to be involved in the Atlantic Canada Surfrider chapter.

  • Kareina Cadel

    FUNDRAISING LEAD

My name is Kareina Cadel (BSc, MREM), and I am a program planning and development professional with a diverse background in resource management, conservation, and sustainability. I've worked with various environmental organizations, including the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), Ripley's Aquarium of Canada, World Wildlife Fund, and the Confederacy of Mainland Mi'kmaq. In 2018, I joined Dalhousie University as the Sustainability Manager, and in building on my expertise in program planning and development, I transitioned to the role of Manager of Student Experience in 2023. Despite growing up in landlocked Ontario, I fell in love with the ocean and I am so excited to join the team and help make a difference.

  • Aidan McGuire

    VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR

Hey! I'm Aidan, and I am the Volunteer Coordinator. My background is in coaching, leadership, and entrepreneurship—I’ve spent years leading teams, running community-focused businesses, and supporting people as they grow. I’ve also been lucky enough to live and work around the world, from South Africa and the UK to different parts of Canada, which really shaped how I connect with people and build community. I’m passionate about getting people involved in causes that matter, and Surfrider’s mission really resonated with me. I'm here to help make volunteering feel fun, easy, and meaningful—whether it's your first cleanup or you're already a regular. Outside of Surfrider, I love surfing, exploring the outdoors, and digging into creative projects. Let’s protect this coastline together!

  • Ariana Gillmer

    BEACH CLEAN-UP COORDINATOR

Hi, I’m Ariana!  I’ve been working in outdoor education on and off for about ten years now, working with both kids and adults to foster a deeper connection with nature. I have experience leading outdoor leadership programs and facilitating beach cleanups on the West Coast and in Ontario. Now, I’m stoked to bring my passion for conservation and community engagement to the east coast. I’m excited to connect with everyone to help preserve and protect our coastal ecosystems.

  • Majok Magot

    BEACH CLEAN-UP COORDINATOR

While growing up, I always believed that water bodies are more than just scenery; they are a force that connects communities and reminds us of the importance of stewardship. After moving to Halifax, I was immediately drawn to the coastline for its beauty and the sense of peace it provides. That connection is what brought me to Surfrider Atlantic. Protecting our coasts is not just an environmental responsibility; it’s about preserving a way of life for generations to come. When I am not working with Surfrider or studying, you will find me outdoors, going to new places, and always looking for ways to give back to the natural world that has given us so much.

  • Haylee Ball

    BEACH CLEAN-UP COORDINATOR

I’m Haylee Ball, a Marine Biology student at Dalhousie University with a passion for ocean conservation and coastal protection. I’m excited to be part of Surfrider because I want to take real, hands-on action in protecting the marine ecosystems I care so much about. I love working in collaborative, community-based settings and look forward to helping make a positive impact through outreach, cleanups, and advocacy.

  • Cheryl Bezuidenhout

    SOCIAL MEDIA MANAGER

My happy place is the beach, so it only makes sense that I would like to help protect beaches and shorelines where I live in Atlantic Canada. I bring years of experience as a graphic designer and writer to my role as a volunteer social media manager with the Surfrider Foundation Atlantic Canada chapter. I have a deep respect and reverence for the ocean, beaches, and the wildlife that inhabit these fragile ecosystems. I hope to help spread the word about the Surfrider Foundation and contribute in a meaningful way to the preservation of the planet’s ocean’s and shorelines.

  • Taran Fournier

    SECRETARY

Hi, my name is Taran, and I’m a Political Science and Sustainability student at Dalhousie University. Growing up in a rural household, I developed a deep appreciation for the outdoors and wildlife, which sparked my lifelong passion for the environment. Throughout my early education, I was involved in conservation committees, a commitment that naturally led me to pursue a degree focused on environmental policy. I believe that by combining knowledge of politics and sustainability, I can help create meaningful, lasting change. Since moving to Halifax, I’ve spent a lot of time at the beach—where my concern for ocean health really came to life. Through my work with Surfrider Atlantic, I will advocate for policies and campaigns that protect our oceans so they can be enjoyed by all for generations to come.

  • Isra Raza Zubair

    EVENT COORDINATOR

I am a seasoned consultant specializing in lean operations, process improvement, change management, and project management. With a deep passion for sustainability and environmental advocacy, I am eager to support Surfrider’s mission to protect and preserve our oceans and coastlines. Committed to driving meaningful change professionally and in my community, I strive to make a lasting impact through my work. Outside of my professional pursuits, I enjoy discovering diverse culinary experiences and immersing myself in nature’s beauty.

We believe that the best way to approach the global issue of marine pollution is through community engagement and education.

Large-scale change in Atlantic Canada begins with the passion and dedication of our local communities, where each small effort contributes to a greater whole. We invite our Atlantic Canadian community to unite in the spirit of ocean literacy and coastal preservation. Together, we can ensure that our beautiful shores remain accessible for all and that ocean recreation becomes an inclusive experience.
Our chapter, deeply committed to these values, organizes frequent beach cleanups along our stunning Atlantic coastlines. These cleanups not only remove debris from our shores but also provide a chance for you to connect with like-minded individuals who share a strong environmental conscience. Throughout the year, we host engaging events such as movie nights featuring local and international environmental documentaries. We also offer educational evenings with experts from the scientific and environmental communities.
Our chapter operates thanks to a dedicated team of volunteers who manage various roles, from organizing events to communications, chapter oversight, partnerships, finances, graphic design, and more. With every new volunteer, our capacity to achieve positive environmental outcomes grows. We welcome you to join our crew and make a meaningful impact on Atlantic Canada's coastal and oceanic heritage. To learn how you can get involved, please visit our volunteer page. Together, we can create a healthier and more accessible ocean environment for all Atlantic Canadians to enjoy.
