Meet the Team

  • Hannah Solway

    CHAIR

I am a marine conservation biologist (MSc) studying the impacts of climate change on ship strikes to large whales. I firmly believe that ocean literacy is the most powerful means by which we can effectively conserve and protect our oceans—a mission that Surfrider and I are deeply committed to. After living in Atlantic Canada for the last 6 years, I knew it was the perfect place for Surfrider to establish itself next. I'm dedicated to making the ocean accessible to all, fostering stewardship and appreciation for our marine environments. When I am not doing research, I help increase ocean literacy across the globe by developing scientific content for Ocean School, a free online ocean educational resource. I also work with the Marine Animal Response Society, rescuing and studying marine animals. I love to hike, surf, camp, and spend as much time outside as possible!

  • Karinne Lantz

    VICE CHAIR

I am grateful to call Nova Scotia home. Growing up on Vancouver Island, oceans and mountains were easy to take for granted when I was young. Later, living away from the coast made me miss and value the oceans more; oceans provide a place for us to play and a source of livelihood for many in Atlantic Canada, while they play a vital role in keeping our planet healthy.

The idea that we hold the earth in trust for future generations resonates with me, as does the understanding that society is the sum of its parts. Collectively, small positive acts can have the potential for meaningful effects. This is part of what has motivated me to become involved with Surfrider Canada. If we can do a bit of good while encouraging others to do a bit, too, we can help ensure that our ocean playground stays as healthy—and beautiful—as possible.

  • Ben Bears

    TREASURER

My name is Ben, and I’m the treasurer of the Surfrider Atlantic Canadian chapter. I grew up on the south shore of Nova Scotia but moved to Halifax for school and stuck around after. I took up surfing 11 years ago and was hooked immediately. My passion for surfing has led me to work for East Coast Surf School for the past five years, so I’m at the beach almost every day. I’m excited to be playing a bigger role with Surfrider in keeping our beaches clean and accessible for everyone. When I’m not surfing some of my other hobbies include chess, volleyball, and macroeconomics.

  • Keegan Leslie

    VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR

My name is Keegan, and I’m an outdoor enthusiast. I moved to Nova Scotia in May of 2022 and instantly fell in love with all the diverse and unique landscapes that our coasts offer. I spend all my free time exploring different parts of our beaches for potential climbing spots and places to spend time with friends. I truly believe in protecting our oceans and trails because they have shaped so much of who I am today.

  • Ben Herringer

    CAMPAIGN COORDINATOR

My first memories of the ocean are from family trips to Canada’s west coast, experiences that shaped my love for water and fascination with marine life. I now live on the east coast in Halifax, on the ancestral and unceded land of the Mi’kmaq people. I’m grateful to be able to live so close to the ocean, and I enjoy going on coastal hikes and surfing as often as possible. I believe we all share a responsibility to protect our oceans, and I joined Surfrider so that I can contribute to ocean conservation efforts in my community and throughout Atlantic Canada.

  • Molly Gunn

    BEACH CLEAN-UP COORDINATOR

As a proud Nova Scotian and avid hiker, climber, and ocean enthusiast, I am so happy to be taking on an active role in cleaning up our coasts. Growing up in rural NS and now based out of Halifax, I’ve learned how diverse our landscape can be which has made me appreciate this province so much more. My passion lies in marine ecology and the interconnectedness of coastal ecosystems and hope to encourage others to actively work to protect these sensitive environments.

  • Faris Abdel-Majid

    PROGRAM COORDINATOR

Hello! My name is Faris; I’m a passionate advocate for our planet’s blue heart, the ocean. Growing up in Egypt and studying here in Nova Scotia, I’ve been lucky to have two beautiful seas and an ocean by my side, where, at an early age, my love and passion for our oceans, sea life and underwater ecosystem blossomed. Having a scuba diving background since childhood, I’ve been fortunate enough to work and travel worldwide with ocean conservation programs in Ecuador and the Galapagos islands, The BVI’s, Peru and Indonesia. Seeing the first-hand damage our oceans and coastlines have endured, it was a no-brainer for me to join the Surfrider Foundation to push for a change in how we treat and care for our oceans and coastline.

  • Madelaine McGarr

    FUNDRAISING LEAD

I'm Madelaine, and I am passionate about ocean and coastal conservation through the power of collective action. After moving to Halifax, I grew to love the coastal and ocean access Nova Scotia has to offer. I learned about Surfrider and was eager to apply my passion for fundraising to the organization's important work. When I'm not working or volunteering, you can usually find me climbing, hiking, and surfing!

  • Stephen Belfield

    OUTREACH LEAD

Lawrencetown resident and Surfer for 25 years. Proud family man and father to 3 boys. Founder of Lawrencetown Surfing Association. Passionate about Surfing, the environment, and community. 👊🙂🤙

We believe that the best way to approach the global issue of marine pollution is through community engagement and education.

Large-scale change in Atlantic Canada begins with the passion and dedication of our local communities, where each small effort contributes to a greater whole. We invite our Atlantic Canadian community to unite in the spirit of ocean literacy and coastal preservation. Together, we can ensure that our beautiful shores remain accessible for all and that ocean recreation becomes an inclusive experience.
Our chapter, deeply committed to these values, organizes frequent beach cleanups along our stunning Atlantic coastlines. These cleanups not only remove debris from our shores but also provide a chance for you to connect with like-minded individuals who share a strong environmental conscience. Throughout the year, we host engaging events such as movie nights featuring local and international environmental documentaries. We also offer educational evenings with experts from the scientific and environmental communities.
Our chapter operates thanks to a dedicated team of volunteers who manage various roles, from organizing events to communications, chapter oversight, partnerships, finances, graphic design, and more. With every new volunteer, our capacity to achieve positive environmental outcomes grows. We welcome you to join our crew and make a meaningful impact on Atlantic Canada's coastal and oceanic heritage. To learn how you can get involved, please visit our volunteer page. Together, we can create a healthier and more accessible ocean environment for all Atlantic Canadians to enjoy.
